The Inverted Mountain
Theory
by

It seems to have been a rather
paralytic week for many people. There is a sense of frustration, a
sense of great uncertainty, a sense of the impossible in the air at
all of our workshops. There have been times when I have wondered if I
can really help you all get past this, because believe me – I know
from experience where you are at!
However, I don’t feel overwhelmed
now, and experience tells me that you will get through this also.
Here is a picture that I drew for
Janet some years ago. I was working through one of her reports and
trying to get a program set up as per the instructions.
I’m not much of an artist (I’m a
much better writer ;o) but this is how I felt :
Arrrrrgh!!!!

Can
you relate?
I
know you can! So today, I’m going to talk about s l o w i n g
down!
Alright – whether you are experienced or brand-spanking-new to this
industry, there have probably been at least a few times that you have
felt so overwhelmed with your business that you didn’t know what to do
next. So much so that it kept you from moving forward. If that is
where you are right now – pay attention.
Pay
close attention, because this is the point at which many a marketer
with great potential will fling their arms up in the air in absolute
disgust and walk away from the industry.
Starting your own home business can be a daunting task – especially if
you have little experience online, not much computer experience, and
you have never run your own business. Anyone who tries to tell you
differently is a bold-face lying stinker.
Many online businesses are designed so that they can be run by anyone
with any skill set. They do their best to set things up in a logical
way, but to the newbie, nothing about it seems logical at all. It
seems as though it was zapped down from Mars.
So,
there you sit all signed up in your new business, all the instructions
laid out in what is supposed to be easy-to-understand format… and you
look at it, and you look at it, and you take a deep breath and look at
it some more. There’s just so much to look at and read, and you wonder
how you will ever learn it all or get through it at all… and you start
to panic. It starts as a tightening in your stomach. Works its way up
your back to your shoulders… pretty soon, you have a nasty, full-blown
headache and you have to go lie down.
After an hour, you get up and go back to your computer and you look at
the instructions again. You look at the website again. Then you take a
deep breath, shake your head, turn off your computer, and go make
yourself a sandwich…
As
you are making your sandwich you wonder how you will ever (ever, ever)
learn all that stuff. It seems like a mountain of information that you
will never, never, never be able to master…
Ok,
stop right there. We need to change your channel. You’re going to
climb that big ol’ overwhelming mountain. And you won’t have to do it
alone. Whether you are aware of it or not, there are hundreds of
people out there going through exactly what you are going through at
this very moment.
First of all, sit in a comfy chair and breathe! Just close your eyes
and take a couple of nice deep breaths. Feels good, doesn’t it!
Ok,
keep your eyes closed and visualize that big ol’ mountain. It’s big.
It’s really big. It’s looming over you like Mount Everest in the dead
of February.
Ok,
now we’re going to climb, but first we are going to flip the
mountain.
Alright, you can see the mountain looming over you, with its big flat
bottom hanging right over your head. I want you to reach up and grab
the edge of it and flip it over so that it’s like a big ol’ inverted
triangle with the pointy end above your head and the big flat side way
above you like an umbrella.
There, doesn’t that feel better!?
Ok,
now grab onto the pointy end and haul yourself up. As soon as you do
this, something really strange happens. The mountain rights itself,
and suddenly, you are on top of that mountain of information (this
happens because you are taking control).
Now
that you are on top of the mountain, it will be much easier for you to
sort through all the details when you get to the bottom of the
mountain. You are at the beginning; there are only a few details that
you really need to pay attention to. And now you can begin to climb
down that mountain, one step at a time until you reach the bottom.
You
are not going to take a nose dive off the top of the mountain to get
to the bottom of the mountain more quickly, while hoping to absorb
every detail as you fly by on the way down This would only result in
crashing at the bottom in a heap of confusion, and while that’s one
choice you could make, I’d avoid it. It’s messy.
No,
you need to walk. Not run, jump, skip or tumble, but walk down that
mountain. With each step you will gain a little more knowledge and a
little more confidence.
Step by step, very steadily, you will make your way down until you
reach the bottom. Oh, and by the way… it’s a really big mountain.
You’re not going to make it down in one day. You may not even make it
down in a week. And that doesn’t matter, because you can stop and camp
along the way. Maybe make a little camp fire and toast some
marshmallows.
It’s not important how long it takes you to get down the mountain –
what is important is that you stay focused on what is in front of you
so that you don’t stumble – or worse…
You
are at the beginning, laying the foundation for your business, so take
your time. It’s more important to be solid with what you are learning
than it is to race forward. Focus on what is in front of you and be
where you are! Put one foot in front of the other and take a step.
Then another, and another, and another. Soon enough you will be where
you want to be, and when you are, you will look back up that mountain
and wonder why you ever made such a fuss about it.
Now
it’s time to make a choice. Do you want to make it in this business or
would you rather go back to punching a time clock for someone else?
It’s up to you.
If
you want to move forward, here are a few things that you will need to
do to keep that nasty wolf named Overwhelmed away from your door:
-
Stay Focused.
Do one thing at a time. Work through it until you feel solid with
it. When you feel solid, move on to the next step.
-
Buddy-Up.
Find someone else who is in a similar situation. Get together via
instant messenger and work though things together. The journey is so
much sweeter when you have company. If you don’t know anyone, ask
your sponsor if they can think of anyone else in the group that
might like to team up for success.
-
Don’t Rush.
Give yourself time to learn. You are on a journey – you might just
as well enjoy it! You are making one of the biggest changes of you
life, so celebrate your courage and go for it!
-
Ask Questions.
Don’t just sit there staring at your computer because you don’t
understand something. Contact your upline or your buddy and get
yourself sorted out.
-
Be Solution Oriented.
Don’t dwell on problems – dwell on solutions. If you spend your time
thinking about all the things you can’t do or can’t figure out, then
you will quickly overwhelm yourself with doubt. Dwell instead on how
you can change the situation. Get creative, Take some risks. Embrace
the challenge!
-
Did I Mention Focus?
As a very wise fella once told me,
with one bum you can’t dance at two weddings. Be where you are.
Focus on the task at hand. You can’t focus on what you are doing if
you are worried about what comes next.
-
Take Breaks.
Enjoy a cup of tea. Go for a walk. Watch a movie. Life must go on
even when you are starting a new business.
Speaking of breaks, take one now. Then come back and reflect on what
you have read here and put it into action in your life and business.
